History of The Royal St Georges Golf Club

Dr Laidlaw Purves of the Royal Wimbledon Golf Club, designed and established the Club in 1887.  The Club was intended to serve the needs of London golfers who were only able to play their golf on often crowded and unkept courses in the area.  Named St. George's, it was to become the English rival to Scotland's St. Andrew's.  Royal status was bestowed on the Club by King Edward VII in May 1902.

Royal St George's golf course is everything you would expect of an Open venue. It's a very tough layout with some great holes over and through the dunes on the front nine. The stretch from 3 to 7 in particular is fantastic. There is not much in the way of scenery but the course makes up for it easily and the famous 14th along the out of bounds by Princes will test your nerves and the 15th is one of the hardest holes on the course. The clubhouse at Royal St Georges has to be experienced as it is one of the finest lounges you will ever go in, as is the dining room which serves a marvellous meal in great surroundings.
